Daddy

Daddy bought home a puppy

In a cardboard box

The box had several airholes

And half a dozen locks

By the time I took off the lid

The puppy was shaking in fear

Gallons of brown liquid

Seeping out of its rear

Daddy grabbed the puppy

By the scruff of its neck

He swore at it for making a mess

And dropped it down on the deck

I started to cry a little

As Daddy drew back his boot

He crushed the puppy’s skull

Blood splattered over his suit

When my mother came home

She found me cradling rags

Patches of fur and bone

Collected together in bags

Daddy had gone to get drunk

He told me to clear up the mess

He said if I didn’t before he got back

I’d be next on the deck.
